After successfully launching the Spark Series  and a plethora of smartphones , TECNO Mobile launched the Tecno Phantom 8 as their biggest and most prominent device of 2017.

We were all expecting the arrival of Phantom 7 but TECNO skipped the number 7 and moved to 8 , which flows with the tide of flagship smartphones of 2017 ( i.e iPhone 8 , Galaxy S8 , Galaxy Note 8 ).

Tecno Phantom 8 is the result of 15months of research & design by over 1,000 engineers and 50 global partners. It was unveiled on the 22nd of October as the successor to Phantom 6. The phantom 8 ships with a 5.7-inch 1920 x 1080 display , 6GB of RAM , 64GB Storage , 20MP selfie camera and 3500mAh battery.

Design & Display :

The Phantom 8 features a different design from its predecessors and this is the third major design change on the Phantom series since its inception in 2013. Shipping with a 5.7-inch FHD 1080 x 1920 display , the Phantom 8 is a premium looking smartphone that is expected to go head-to-head with other flagship smartphones of 2017.

The Tecno Phantom 8 comes with a full metal unibody that is glossy and can be mistaken for plastic. But don’t get it twisted , the Phantom 8 is fully metallic with a 5.7-inch 2.5D glass screen. Tecno calls the design “Diamond Fire Design” which , going forward , may be the design of other phantom devices.

Hardware & Software :

Regarding hardware , Tecno Phantom 8 is powered by an Octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 chipset clocked at 2.6Ghz frequency. It comes with 6GB RAM , 64GB internal storage with an option to expand using a microSD card up to 2TB.

However , the Phantom 8 does not come with a dedicated SD card slot but you can use your SIM 2 slot as your memory card slot. This means you’ld have to choose between using 2 SIMS or 1 SIM + microSD card.

The new phantom comes with a USB Type-C  cable which allows for rapid charge and file transfer across devices. It also supports USB OTG which enables mobile devices to talk to one another.

The Phantom 8 runs Android 7.0 Nougat operating system with version 3.0 of Tecno’s custom User Interface called the HiOS.

Camera

The Tecno Phantom 8 sports 12MP + 13MP dual rear cameras which , according to TECNO , provides “professional level photos for everyone”. The 12MP camera uses SONY IMX386 sensor with f/1.8 lens and has 2X optical zoom , while the 13MP sensor has 10X optical zoom.

The camera also comes with features such as Autofocus, portrait mode [refocus], Auto HDR, Night mode, Superpixel and smart filters.

For selfies , the Phantom 8 has a 20MP with “smart dual selfie” flash. The front camera is 30% brighter than its predecessor and includes features such as a Smooth Mode as well as a Brighten Mode.

Battery

The Phantom 8 ships with a 3500mAh battery which is an improvement on last year’s edition. The battery should last up to a full day of usage and thanks to the USB Type-C chord , the Phantom 8 can charge from 0 – 100% within 70 mins.
